Outdoorsy, Cool & Relaxed: A Custom Capsule Wardrobe Client Profile
Profession: Retired Business Owner
Age: 60's
Season: Summer 2026
This case study shows how a Pittsburgh-based personal stylist built a 45-outfit Custom Capsule Wardrobe for an active, retired client in her 60s — designed around biking, hiking, and dog-walking, without sacrificing color, edge, or personal style.
About the Client
I last worked with this client eight years ago, before opening my Shadyside Fitting Studio here in Pittsburgh. Back then, our sessions meant trips to the mall paired with Closet Consultations - my in-home process for auditing and reworking an existing wardrobe. So when I saw she'd booked a Custom Capsule Wardrobe - a fully personalized, ready-to-wear collection built and curated for a client in advance, rather than assembled item-by-item on the fly, I was thrilled. It meant I could finally give her the experience I'd always wanted: a private fitting inside a custom-designed mini-boutique, stocked with pieces from her favorite stores alongside new brands I knew she'd love. No more running around the mall.
This client has always had a vitality and funky style that made her the "cool aunt." She's never been afraid to express herself, lean into color, or have fun with her fits. What's stayed constant: she's active, and her wardrobe has to keep up with an on-the-go lifestyle.

Style Priorities
-
Barrel-leg pants she can tuck into scrunch socks for biking
-
Jeans with interesting seams and edgy distressing
-
Colorful crossbody bags she can wear biking and hiking
-
Cute ball caps that pair with her outfits and protect her from the sun
-
Comfortable hiking boots and sneakers that fit her style

Fit Hacks
-
Graphic tees layered over solid tees to visually extend torso length
-
Very low-rise denim for stomach comfort, without crotch sagging
-
Boxy shirts that skim rather than cling through the midsection

Personal Touches
-
A paw-print pendant necklace honoring the dogs she's rescued over the years
-
Galoshes for chasing her pups through the mud
Building the Wardrobe: Our Focus
The goal was a wardrobe that would carry her through summer into early fall. She wasn't interested in shorts, so pants and jeans needed to be in lighter-weight fabrics to keep her cool.
She's most comfortable in t-shirts, but they need personality, like stripes or a fun graphic. She also looks amazing in a popped collar with a split neck or unbuttoned at the chest; that shape frames her face and lets her chic short haircut, natural color, and unique frames from local eyewear boutique Heidi Optics really stand out.
The Final Looks
She hadn't bought new clothing in the eight years since we last worked together, so the goal was to build out a substantial, wearable collection from scratch. She left the studio with more than 45 complete outfits, the looks highlighted here are just a sample.

“I hope you're having a wonderful summer!! Mine is so much better because of you and your styling skills. I don't know what I would do without your help. Thank you again.”
- A note from the client, two month after her fitting.
Frequently
Asked
Questions

What is a Custom Capsule Wardrobe?
It's a fully personalized, pre-curated collection of clothing and accessories — sourced, measured, and styled for a client in advance — so they can shop an entire private mini-boutique in one sitting instead of building a wardrobe item by item.
Is styling only for people who feel lost with their personal style?
No. This client has always had a strong, confident sense of style; what she needed was the time and expertise to source, fit, and update her wardrobe — not a new identity.
Can a capsule wardrobe work for an active or outdoorsy lifestyle?
Yes. This wardrobe was built specifically around biking, hiking, and day-to-day movement, proving that comfort, function, and personal style aren't mutually exclusive.
