When You Look in the Mirror and Something Feels “Off”
(What a Personal Stylist Sees Immediately)
Sound familiar?
You’re trying on outfit after outfit and nothing lands. No instinctual yes. No “Aha” moment.
Just that feeling of something being…off.
This is such a common experience and I want you to hear this right away:
Most of the time, what you’re noticing is something much more nuanced:
It’s about proportion and balance.
Why Clothes Can Fit But Still Feel Wrong
There are endless theories about how you should dress your body if it’s a certain “shape.”
Rectangle. Pear. Apple. Hourglass.
But here’s the thing:
I have dressed hundreds, possibly thousands, of bodies over the past 20 years, and this is what I know to be true:
No one is simply a shape.
Each person has their own relationship with their body.
Each person wants to present themselves differently depending on the day, the audience, the season of life they’re in.
Strict rules don’t allow for real life.
They don’t account for:
where weight is actually carried
changing trends in silhouette
sensory needs or body discomfort
lifestyle, profession, or personal expression
Wardrobe should work for your life, not a diagram.
I feel the same way about other rigid systems in style, including seasonal color rules, which I explore more deeply in Thinking Beyond Color Analysis.
What a Stylist Notices Immediately: Proportion

Often, when something feels “off,” it’s because the proportions of the outfit aren’t working together yet.
For example:
A beautiful oversized sweater might feel wrong not because it’s unflattering but because it’s paired with a wide-leg pant, and the outfit has no clear line or structure.
Nothing is “bad.”
It just needs balance.
That’s the difference between clothes and styling.
Prompts to Try When You’re Not Getting the “Aha” Moment

If you’re standing in front of the mirror and something isn’t clicking, here are a few questions I often guide clients through:
Observe proportions
Do you feel like your clothes are swallowing you…or wearing you?
Is there a part of your body you’d like to streamline or soften?
Are you curious about the architecture you can create through clothing?
Do you want to lengthen a part of your silhouette?
Is there something you’d like to emphasize or draw the eye toward?
After answering these, ask yourself:
What is one small adjustment that could change the line of the outfit?
Simple Styling Adjustments That Create Balance
If your clothes feel like they’re swallowing you:
Try sizing down, or adjusting just one proportion.
If you love an oversized look, consider pairing it with a more fitted base layer underneath.
If you want to straighten or minimize an area (like the hips):
A longer, straighter jacket can create a clean line that skims rather than clings.
If you want more visual “architecture”:
Experiment with volume somewhere intentional:
a balloon sleeve
a structured trouser
a lug-sole platform shoe

If you want to lengthen the leg:
High-waisted, full-length pants create instant elongation.
If you want to draw attention upward:
Try necklines that highlight the collarbone:
bateau
halter
off-the-shoulder

Think of Getting Dressed Like Sculpture
I often tell clients:
Your body is not something to "fix."
It’s the base of the sculpture.
Everything you add — fabric, shape, texture, line — manipulates the form.
With each layer, you create interest.
With each proportion, you create intention.
That’s where style lives.
